CHURCHILL AUCTION
Poor Canterbury Response To Appeal
Dominion Special Service. CHRISTCHURCH^ August 26. “It seems queer that ydu can’t collect old books and curios of value for the Churchill auction in Canterbury, when in other parts of New Zealand collections worth about, f-40,000 have lieeti made,” said Mr. G. A. Hayden, secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board, who was present at. the monthly meeting of the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council today. A letter was received from Mr. E. J. Bell announcing the disbanding of the committee that had txien sei tip to organize the collection in Canterbury.
"The general committee resolved at a recent meeting to cense activities on account of the exceedingly poor response.” said Mr. Bell. “The few books sent in are lieing held and will probably be forwarded to Wellington if the auction is hold there.” “We have had some very valuable contributions in Wellington,” said Mr. Hayden. “The curios include a gold watch presented by Nelson to one of his captains. It is engraved 1805, and a high valuation has been put on it. I should have thought that you could have collected many curios and old books of value and interest in Christchurch."
