PROTEST TO MINISTER

Man’s Discharge From Home Guard Camp

Dominion Special Service.

CHRISTCHURCH, August 26. A man who had been in the Home Guard permanent camp had been discharged’from service in tragic circumstances last week, said Mr. W. S. Macgibbon at the monthly meeting of the Canterbury Patriotic Council today, when he framed a motion of protest to be sent to the Government“This man has five children, the youngest one 11 months old. The most tragic feature of his case is that his wife had died the week before,” Mr. Alacgibbon said. “He was discharged according to the new regulation which releases men with more than three children. He came to us for help because his ration book was in At ellington. He had not been given enough notice to find a new job and he was destitute in his bereaved home. Fortunately his mother was able to take the.children temporarily, and we were able to give him.some help. “I have put these facts before you because I believe an emphatic protest should be made to the Government to see that such things do not happen in our midst. The facts of this case should be sent from this council to the Minister of Defence asking him to investigate flie case to make sure that such a thing does not happen again in this country.” The motion was passed unanimously, Messrs..E. H. Andrews and E. F. Willcox supporting Mr. Macgibbon’s statements.
