Dominion’s Labour Reserves
The position had been reached when it appeared necessary that there should be a special staff of the National Service Department engaged ex’ clusively with the control and direction of the nation’s industrial resources, said the Minister of Industrial Manpower, Mr. McLagan, recently. Consideration was being given to the organization of such a branch. A survey of the reserves of labour, both male and female, to find the numbers engaged in each industry, the numbers withdrawn from each type of occupation, and labour shortages was to be made.
Coupled with this inquiry, steps would be taken to find the total requirements of various commodities and services so that a definite plan could be formulated to balance the needs of industry and of defence. The possibility of training more workers for various occupations would also be investigated, said the Minister.
