CHRISTCHURCH, August 4. Though the scratching pen was freely used when acceptances were received today for the first day’s programme of the Grand National Steeplechase meetln„, there were not many surprise detections. Colonl French, Anglo-French, Nlgat HawK and Song Boy were taken out of the Grana National Steeplechase; and Happy Enuing, Treasurer, Doubleack, Waitoru. Meet Street, The Champ, Rara Avifi, Wgio r e f Kevin, Imperium, Mauretania, and Gold Court were withdrawn from the Cup. From the National Hurdles, on the second day, the only defections were .Strip, Cuisinier. Phalanx, and Bow Street. •Many of those mentioned are engaged in other events, these' including rn £\ s '’,L e ’'' Happy Ending,. Fleet btreet, The Champ. Rara Avis, Maggiore, Night Ha\vk. Song Boy, Imperium, Phalanx, Heidelberg and Bow Street. Acceptances for the Avonlieau Handicap number 41, and as the satety number for the seven furlong post is d-, provision will have to be made for the running of the race in two divisions.
