RICCARTON WORK
Course Proper Not Open By Telegraph.-—From The Watcher. CHRISTCHURCH, August 4. Weather conditions were perfect for training at Riccarton this morning, and. as the result of two days’ mild nor’westers the going is in wonderful order, but there was not much doing as regards either jumping or fast work. Course Not Open. . . G. W. Greene was anxious to school Dozle Boy over the National fences but was told that the course proper would not be open till Thursday. That is giving the hors&s only one day to school over the National fences proper, so Dozie Boy just pottered about in the centre of the track. Slayer Right Again. (Slayer was out and also pottering about. He seems all right again, and his trainer is satisfied, but the horse will not be schooled, again (before the race. Eyes "on Foxlana. Foxlana attracted a lot of attention as he came out for exercise after his trip down, but be was not stripped D. Redstone will definitely be his rider in the National and L. G. Morris hais made the, trip to supervise the final arrangements. Bn K r KnapS schooled Kanul te Pai, despite the fact that he had arrived only a few hours previously. He went over four hurdles with the Blechelm representative Gluecos. Kan-ni te Pai gave a very smart display and Gluecos also went very welt. J. Williamson rode Kanul te Pai, but Temperton will be his rider in the National and Williamson may ride Alienate. Look Well. , . , . Alienate was out working, having arrived overnight. He looks well, as does Authoress, who was anxious to go in her work. Jenkins will again ride ner here. N Native °Song, whose luck has been out in hurdle races, gave a fast display over four hurdles in company with the Washdyke winner Adina. Steeplechasers Jump. The only steeplechasers to jump over the inside fences were Sir Hugh, Master Dingle and Night Scout, who went together, and all gave a good display. Boloyna Fit. , . . Boloyna travelled very well over six furlongs to please more than Forte, the last half being run in 53. Boloyna looks very fit. Local Fancy. . Sally Lunn, who needs a bit of racing, took M for the last four of six with M 11low Wood. iSpratt rides Sally Lunn in the Cup, for which she is a strong local fancy. The Champ Disappoints. The Champ did not appear to work with much Zest, and his showing in the Brabazon Handicap so disappointed Ins connexions 'that he will not be a starter in the Cup, but will be reserved for the Paparua Handicap. This leaves Broughton without a ride in the Cup. He is ondeavouring to get ou Rakanui, who is duo here tomorrow. B. H. Morris was approached to ride Rakanui, but lie will not consider leaving bis own team. The North Islanders who were at Hastings on Saturday appear to have been greatly impressed by (Rakanui’s good race. Inconsistent. , Few horses in the Cup will strip better than Palfrey, who went better than Rara Avis over four this morning in 52, but his form has not been consistent. Rara Avis gives tho impression that he is not hitting out so freely as he was at Trentham. Good Half. I'Teet Street did a good half with Kernel in 51. Both these horses raced prominently on Saturday. L. J. Ellis's Mount. All Night did a good working gallop over six furlongs, the last four in 54. He appears quite s/Und and hit out ■well. E. J. lElLis has been engaged for All Night in the Cup, but, as there is always tiie chance that bls mount may go lame, the connexions of Compeer have decided to wait last-minute developments before making a definite riding engagement for their horse. Has Done Well. . Pekoe was out doing exercise, and be will probably school in the morning with Alienate and Authoress, Pekoe has done well 'Since Wellington. Other North Islanders to arrive were Cheddlngton, Cherry Plum, Malacca, Happy Ending, Gladynev, Moderate, Ozel and Renascor. Soreness Gone, Clansman moved without any signs of soreness in pace work, and Iceland Spar, who has also been sore, sprinted tive furlongs smartly, in IA4-*. Improved. , A horse that appears to have improved since racing at Trentham. is Aussie Ka. lie claims an engagement in the Enfield Steeplechase as well as the National, but will probably start in the National. Slow Trip. . , i x The North Islanders have found transport tedious and slow. Aussie Ka and Minority had a rough trip of 15 hours on the boat, and the latest arrivals took six hours to reach Riccarton from Lyttelton. May Still Run. w . Treasurer was on the tracks this- morning. and he was worked. He appeared to pull up well enough, so there may still be a chance of him running.
