MAYOR OF PETONE
Missing In Middle East Corporal George London, reported missing in recent fighting in the Middle East, is mayor of the borough of Petone. He is aged 37, and at the time of his election to the mayoralty in 1938, he was among the youngest men in New Zealand to have held such an office. His father, the late Mr. George London, was a previous mayor of Petone, and his grandfather, llenry London, was a Wellington ratepayer of 1842. Corporal London was a Petone borough councillor from 1933 till he was elected mayor in 1938, and at the 1935 election, he topped the poll for councillors. He was chairman of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board (1939--10), and a member of the Wellington Harbour Board. He went overseas with the 3rd Echelon. His mother is Mrs. F. K. London, Lower Hutt.
