News And Notes. (Hub’s Temporary Homo. For the first time since it was established at 15 Manners Street, the Spinsters’ Club was not open on Sunday to men of the forces, due to the fact that the 'earthquake made it necessary to evacuate the premises temporarily. Members therefore invited groups of men to their homes and entertained them with games, music and home-cooked meals. Through the generosity of Mr. F. Carr, of the Majestic cabaret, the club will in the meantime hold its Sunday entertainments in the cabaret, starting next Sunday at 2.30. Members arc grateful for this gesture and thank the donor for his kindness. The dances held at the club last Tuesday. Friday and Saturday were popular. Vacancies Filled. Mrs. Guthrie presided at a meeting ot the Mothers’ Helpers committee in Wellington yesterday. Those present were Mesdames Bayfield, .MePiirlimd, Brawn, Lyons, Palmer and Denzil-Ward. The secretary reported that as vacancies on the staff were now filled it was hoped that applicants for help would not disappointed. Donations were acknowledged from Airs. C. M. TunWl and Airs. H. H. Turner.
At Webbys Club. Members of Webbys Club were busy during the weekend entertaining large numbers of guests. The highlight of the week’s activities was on Friday night, when Colonel Cowles visited the club to be presented with another handsome gift by the hon. treasurer, Miss V. Macdonald. The girls are steadily increasing their amount to the Returned Services Association, which is put into Webby’s Trust Fund for the rehabilitation of men returning from overseas. Ou Saturday popular baud novelties and dances were enjoyed. A. home-made supper was served, the women members attending to this item in their usual generous manner. Grosvenor Club. Men of the forces largely attended the Grosvenor Club at the weekend, .when dancing to the music of the Grosvenor orchestra was enjoyed. The lounge and studio were attractively decorated with spring flowers. Preparations are now'well in hand for the gala surprises next weekend. Voluntary helpers included Mesdames Silcox, Gordon, Rayly, Devery, Garratt, Misses E. Trezise, M. Chappell. K. Hughes, B. Haynes, Shakespeare and Mr. Mitchell. Kitchen Tea. Mrs. A. J. Hyder, High School, Lower Hutt, was hostess at a kitchen tea on .Saturday afternoon at her home for Miss Mollie Bodie, whose marriage to Mr. Scobie McKenzie will take place shortly. Mrs. Hvder presented the guest of honour and'her mother with shoulder sprays. The drawing-room was bright with pink camellias, azaleas and blue irises from the garden. Two bridesmaids-to-be. Misses Elthia Watson and Paddy Steele, were present. Mrs. Gordon, junior, and Miss Elthea Watson won competitions.
Hutt Valley Services Club. The hostesses at the Hutt Valley Services Club at the weekend were members of the committee of the women’s section of the R.S.A. The rooms, arranged with spring flowers, were thronged with dancers on Saturday night. Sundays programme included community singing, games, solos by Misses Joan Akers and Lorraine Cahill, and items by Mr. Burridge, ventriloquist, with Mr. Mann at the piano. The. committee thank the following for gifts:—Mr. Heggie, firewood: Mr. Munday, meat; Mr. Horn.'milk.
Birthday Celebration. The Wellington After-Care Association (for retarded children) celebrated the twelfth annual birthday party of the Children’s Club recently in the New Century Hall, Kent. Terrace. Mrs. E. J. Moore. J.P.. president, welcomed the mothers and children and was presented with a bouquet. Games and music were enjoyed and birthday cake was served with the afternoon tea. A large box of chocolates was given by Mr. W. IJ. Preston.
