Shift To New Premises By Mayoress’ Depot

Subsequent 'events proved that the decision 'to establish a new headquarters for the 'Wellington Mayoress’ Patriotic Depot, made last week by Mrs. T. C. A. Hislop at a meeting of her executive committee, was both fortunate and opportune. Arrangements had been completed by Mrs. Hislop and the most important part of the depot’s equipment, which included eight sewing maehinias,-a number of trestle tables and several eases full of new materials, had been safely transferred to the new rooms in Electricity House by four corporation employees who volunteered their services on Saturday morning preceding the 'earthquake. Consequently the damage suffered at the depot’s former premises in the old library building had little or no effect on the heavy cases of clothing which were all that had been left there. Though the majority of her workers were willing to continue at the old quarters and carried on after the June 24 shake, Mrs. Hislop considered that they would not feel secure in a brick building already showing signs of dilapidation. The now depot, situated on the second floor of Electricity House, in Lower Cuba Street, is a definite improvement on the previous quarters. _ The main sorting room is large 'and airy, with excellent lighting and heating facilities, a well-ap-pointed kitchen being attached. The team of National Party helpers on duty yesterday were busy sorting and unpacking the transferred eases so that the depot could be restored to working order as quickly as possible. An office is to be partitioned off and canvns shelves for holding hundreds of bales of clothing have yet to be installed. The more bulky items will remain al the old library building which, though littere/l with fallen ceiling debris and dust, will still be available for storage purposies.
