NEWPORT NEWS?. August .1. The aircraft carrier Essex, of 25,000 tons. Hie first to be launched since Pearl Harbour, slid down the ways today. .15 mouths and three days after the keel was laid. Ten similar carriers are still under construction, and Congress has authorized 22 more. Tlie Navy at. present, has five carriers iu service, together with an undetermined number of vessels which have been converted to carriers.
