HORDES OF U-BOATS
Nazi Admiral’s Promise LONDON, August 2. Stockholm reports that Admiral Doenitz, head of the U-boat forces, declared, in an interview with the “Svenska Dagbladet” : “Contrary to the general opinion, fighting in the American waters is not simple. The Americans have rapidly created a defence which inspires respect, and also inspires a positive conclusion on the fighting spirit of the American crews. It is our intention to meet the new American defences with new hordes of U-boats.” Admiral Doenitz said : “Tlie AngloSaxon leaders lack ideas. Our wolf pack tactics arc successful. U-boat, commanders are actually pleased that the enemy has introduced the convoy system.” Tie ridiculed stories that tlie Nazis were using U-boat bases in neutral territory, and also the suggestion that they were employing mother ships. “The secret of the long range of Üboats is the sacrifice of comfort, for range and fighting qualities.” he said. "R.A.F. bombardments of U-boat. bases in 1910 could have been unpleasant, but U-boats are now operating from absolutely bombproof concrete sheds.” The correspondent of tlie Canadian Press on board >i Canadian warship says that a heavy concentration of anti-sub-marine ships is now operating, waging relentless warfare against the U-boats, which have already sunk five merchantmen in Canadian waters. The Canadian Navy is using the new secret Bangor class vessels .successfully in these operations. Men who sail in them unanimously praise them and predict that when the full story is told they will outshine the famous Canadian corvettes.
