LONG SESSION ENDS
OTTAWA, August 2. Parliament lias been suspended after almost continuous sessions since last November. The outstanding piece of legislation was the passage of the Overseas Conscription Act after many weeks of debate, climaxed by an overwhelmingly favourable plebiscite. The Government also imposed a tremendous tax burden on the people, to pay for war expenditure ‘this year, of 3.300,000,000 dollars. Under the new rates' a single person earning 3000 dollars a year pays 10(54 dollars in income tax, and >■ married man with two children who has the same income pays 6R4 dollars. After consulting the British and Atn-eri'-au Governments, it has been considered best for Canada to maintain her Charge d'Affaires at. Vichy, and also to maintain the French Legation at Ottawa.
