CHARGE OF DESERTION
A soldier who had been 13 times absent without leave since his enlistmeut in May. 1040. was charged before a district court-martial with desertion on active service. The accused. Private Henry Henery, was absent without leave from June 25 till apprehended by the civil police at Utiku, Taihape, on July 23. Accused’s statement was that his sister told him by telephone that he was not wanted at home. He applied for leave to go home, so that he could find out what the trouble was. Leave was refused, so he left for home. There he found nu incorrect statement had come to his parents’ notice. His return to camp was delayed by slips and bad weather, and lie was actually on his way to the station when arrested. He had been seven months overseas in the Pacific area. The court’s finding will be announced later.
