A fire which broke out ou the top uoor of Guthrie, Bowrou and Co.’s two-stoneu building in Wakefield Street, Wellington, was under the control of the firemen within ten minutes of the alarm being given at 7.39 last night by Mr Sherwin, who was fire-watching in the Hotel Regent. The origin of the firei is unknown, but it is thought probable that it started in a pile of wood-shavings which had been impregnated with oil and paint thrown off the shelves during the earthquake. The fire was attacked from the front and rear entrances, two lines of hose being used. Fire engines from the central and Thorndon stations attended. The fire brigade was assisted by two squads of E.F.S. members.. Salvage sheets were used extensively in preventing damage downstairs. Only prompt action by the brigade prevented a serious fire because of the quantity or inflammable goods stored nearby.
