PAY OF SOLDIERS

Australia And New Zealand Compared Increases in the pay, of Australian soldiers and their dependants’ allowances are to be provided for in the next Federal Budget, according to a recent announcement of the Prime Minister, Mr. Curtin, It was stated at the same time that the soldier would probably benefit to the extent of 1/- a day. The Australian private, whether at home or overseas, now gets 8/- a day; the New Zealand private 7/- at home and 7/6 overseas. Compared with the New Zealander the apparent advantage to the Australian soldier, both on the present rate and that to which it is expected to be raised, is cancelled by the different allowances to dependants granted by the respective Governments, and the respective allotment requirements. The larger New Zealand allotment, at least 4/6 a day in New Zealand against at least 3/6 a day in Australia, and a larger domestic allowance, 1/6 a day against 6d„ give New Zealand wives larger weekly receipts than Australian wives, though the latter receive 2/6 a day for the first chihL 2/a day for the second, and 1/6 a day for the third, against a fiat rate iu New Zealand of 1/6 for each child up to a limit of five children. This is shown in the following table of the amounts (allowance and allotment) received weekly by wives in the two countries:

The following table shows the difference in the pay rates of the private soldier in each country, it being seen that the Australian soldier has the ultimate benefit of deferred pay which the New Zealander does not enjoy:— Aust., at

There has not been any suggestion of an increase in the rates of pay of New Zealand soldiers (the domestic allowance was increased recently), but, it is understood, there is a possibility of married junior officers receiving an increase.

New Zealand Australia Wife only 54/3 49/Wife and child 73/6 60/6 Wife and 2 children . 84/80/6 Wife add 3 children . 94/6 91/-
