Careless Letter-Writer

The danger of including in letters overseas matter that might convey information to Hie enemy was emphasized by (lie prosecution and rhe magistrate, in the Magistrates’ Court, when Edith Olive Collison, married woman, appeared on a charge of having dispatched overseas a letter containing information likely to be of use to the enemy. Througboul the war, said DetecliveSergeanl Hall, il had been found that people, most of whom were ■decent, loyal citizens, bad written letters with a careless disregard for what was included in them. The police department was concerned with deterring these people. Remarking that there was no ulterior motive in what defendant, had done, the magistrate, Mr. Bundle, said that in the circumstances he would impose a nominal penalty of £2O.
