NEW OFFENCE Fine For Taking Drink From Hotel

The first case in Wellington under tlie new licensing regulations came before the Magistrates’ Court yesterday. Patrick McNamara admitted removing liquor from a hotel outside the hours for the sale of liquor. Senior-Sergeant G. J. Paine said that defendant, who was a barman in the hotel, was found when about to leave tlie hotel on a Satui'dny afternoon witli two bottles of port wine in his possession.

Defendant told the magistrate, Mr. Stilwell, that lie did not know it was an offence to take drink from a hole) at that hour and he was taking it to tlie home of a relative. Tlie magistrate remarked that the relevant clause of tlie regulations prescribed a line of not loss than £2 and not more than £lO, and lined defendant ■tlie minimum timonnt and 10/- costs.
