CHINESE FORCES PRESS ON
Attacking Towns In Kiangsi RAILWAY OFFENSIVE (British Official Wireless and Press Assn.) (Received July 30, 7 p.m.) LONDON, July 29. The Chungking correspondent of the Associated Press of America says that Chinese troops have encircled the outer regions of .Kweiki, on the Ch’ekiang-Kian'gsi ■ railway line, forcing the Japanese to withdraw inside the fortifications of the town. Fighting has also continued south of Yingtan, another station on the railway.
The Chinese troops attacking Linehwan, 60 miles south-eastward of Nanehang, reached the outskirts of the city on Sunday and are now launching a fierce assault. In the southern tip of Honan Province the Chinese took a heavy toll of Japanese troops north-west of Sinyang.
An appeal for aid to China to relieve distress was made at Mansion House, London, today by the Foreign Secretary, Mr. Eden, who said that China was now more isolated than before. In spite of their own difficulties the hearts of the British people were with the Chinese people and they were more anxious than ever to extend practical help. Mr. Eden announced that the King and Queen would contribute £lOOO sterling to the fund. The Chinese Ambassador, Dr. Wellington Koo, stressing the need for munitions for China, said that however trying the situation might be the Chinese people were grimly determined to go on with their hard contest till victory was achieved. After the war the field for collaboration between Britain and China would be great. There were many ideas and ideals which were common to both, and their intimate collaboration would not only be bound to be of mutual ■benefit, but would also help to bring about that long-desired meeting of the East and West which was an aspiration of far-sighted ■ statesmen as well as a dream of the poets.
