COMMONS OPPONENTS
Relatively Big Vote On Pensions Bill (Received July 30. 9 p.m.) LONDON, July 29. Scenes which for long have not been witnessed in the House of Commons occurred at the end of a debate on the Government's proposals to increase the supplementary old age pensions by 2/6 a week and other allowances. The Government secured assent by 223 votes to 63, and this result was received witli cries, “Resign! Give up the job!” from those who advocated more generous terms, A number of Labour members described the proposals as mean, and one called tlie Government a "half-dollar Government.” Political observers point out Hint this vote against the Government was the largest since the present Government; was formed iu, 1940.
