LIMITED NEW NAZI BREAK-THROUGH
Battle Of Don Bend LONDON, July 30. Fierce fighting south and south-west of Kletskaya, in the Don bend, has been reported in .the two latest Soviet communiques. At this point, about 70 miles north-west of the great steel city of Stalingrad, it was announced last night that the enemy broke through after stubborn lighting. Today’s communique reports further enemy tank and infantry attacks in this area, but the Germans failed to achieve a further break-through. For the fifth time in succession the communique reports heavy counterattacks by Soviet planes, tanks and infantry against groups of Germans crossing to the south of the Don in the lower reaches. In the Bataisk area (15 miles south of Rostov) the Germans have advanced in a number of sectors. • i ■ Mr. Paul Wintertou, “News Chronicle” and 8.8. C. correspondent in Moscow, says German tanks and infantry are streaming across the lower, Don at a number of points. In the plains south of Rostov the enemy are making full ■ use of their superiority in armour, and there is no sign of the drive being checked.
ROSTOV LEFT IN RUINS
STOCKHOLM, July 29. The Berlin correspondent of • the “Svenska Dagbladets” says that Rostov is a smouldering pile of ruins. The Russians scorched everything, and the city presents a, picture similar to that of devastated Dunkirk. The Bridge, spanning the Don, warehouses, factories, and everything of vital importance has been blown up or burnt.
10,000-TANK ARMY'
Thrown Against Caucasus (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 29. Moscow reveals that 20 German tank divisions, totalling 10,000 tanks, have been thrown into action in the bid for the Caucasus. The “Red Star” reports that the Germans in the last two months have transferred 14 infantry divisions and two tank divisions from France to Russia.
TOTAL EFFICIENCY DEMANDED
LONDON, July 29. The Moscow party organ, “Pravda,” says that every citizen must be ready to become a member of the armed forces and that no excuse will justify anyone neglecting to train. Pointing out that inefficiency is a crime against the State, “Pravda” criticizes “a certain military college at Novosbirsk” where tests showed that the students were inefficient and lacked appreciation of the gravity of the hour. It is reported from Kuibyshev that harvesting of the grainfields of the Volga Basin lias been ordered to be speeded up. The Kuibyshev district committee of the Communist Party lias issued an elevenpoint order, criticizing the slow start with the harvesting.
