DERELICT CARS

Traffic Department Problem Since the new year of registration, which commenced on July 1, the Wellington traffic department has been bothered with complaints from people about derelict ears. These cars, usually old and decrepit in appearance, have not beeu re-registered nnd, as a rule, they have one or two fiat tyres. People complain when they find that such cars have been left opposite their places of business or residence night and day for a week or -more. What to do witli t-tich cars constitutes a minor problem. While there is a hy-law against all-night parking in public streets, a by-law more honoured in tlie breach than the observance, tlie owner still lias his rights, and towing the cars away and dumping them might be too drastic a proceeding; What is being done is to seek out the owner, ascertainable from the registered number plate on the car, and persuade him to act, by either removing the car from the public street and garaging' It properly, or, if finished with, by seeing that it is dumped in the place set aside for such purpose.

Tlie departmental view is that derelict.cars cannot be permitted to cumber public roads indefinitely to the detriment of traffic.
