VICE-REGAL VISIT

Wellington Overseas League Social There was a large and representative attendance of members at a social held in the Pioneer Club rooms by the Wellington branch of the Overseas League last night. Guests were received by Sir Michael Myers, president, Mr. Will Appleton, chairman, and Mrs. Appleton, aud were addressed briefly by his Excellency the Governor-General, who is a vice-president of the parent body of the league. Mr. Karl Atkinson, who acted as compere, arranged a musical programme which featured the works of English composers. Selections were played by the Royal New Zealand Air Force Concert Orchestra, conducted by Flight Lieutenant Gladstone Hill, director of music, R.N.Z.A.F., and other performances included vocal solos by Miss Molly Atkinson, verse-speaking by Miss Mary Mackenzie, and trio music by Bandsmen A. Munro, A. C. Ramsay and W. Kohn. Choruses wore also sung. The accompanists were Miss Jocelyn Walker and Mr. Clement Howe. Special guests included Sir Harry Batterbee, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in New Zealand, and Lady Batterbee, Dr. W. A. Riddell, High Commissioner for Canada, and Mrs. Kiddili, Air Commodore and Mrs. R. V. Goddard, and Major Martin (aide-de-camp).

Victoria League Aft-emoon. Members of the Victoria League, Wellington, were entertained at a musical afternoon in the league rooms yesterday afternoon. The president, Mrs. J. A. Doctor, welcomed those present and read extracts from London letters. Mrs. 15. Ballinger and Mrs. 11. W. T. Eagers arranged the programme and gave songs nnd Miss Lena Van Stnveren presented recitations. The accompanist was Mrs. G. A. Spink. Stylosis birch and jonquils decorated the tables and tea was served. Shop Day. The Victoria League will hold a shop day in the league rooms. D.I.C. Building. Wellington, tomorrow from 10 till 4 to help funds for the league’s hostel in London. Here men on leave may get an excellent bed and breakfast service for 2/6. Stalls will include .cakes, produce, faneywork, flowers and “white elephant.
