GRIT COLLECTOR

Evans Bay Position For some time past now the people of Kilbirnie east and Rongotai who reside immediately south and south-east o£ tne Evans Bay power-house have been promised some abatement of the smoke and grime nuisance emanating from tne power-house chifnney stuck. It is not the fault of tho authorities that something practical has not been done oclore this, but shipping and other troubles incidental to wartime have delayed action. At present the position is that perhaps 80 to 90 per cent, of the grit-collector plant: is in Wellington, though not assembled. There are still essential P al ’ ts to come from Australia, notably tne casings for tho big fan® which are to play such an important part in separating’ the grit from the smoke and gas which escape through the stuck. As soon as these parts arrive from Australia, it is hoped that the department will be in a position to erect the new plant. This could not be done at present because of the demands being made upon tho genera ting plant, night and day. Some relief might soon he accorded, with the addition of a new 20.060 kilowatt unit to the North Island hydro-electric system. When that pens flic opportunity may present itseit to push on with the erection of the grit collector.
