TIMARU MAYOR OVERSEAS TO FORFEIT SEAT
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) TIMARU. July 27. The Timaru Borough Council tonight declined, by 4 votes to 3, to grant a further extension of leave to the mayor, Major W. G. Tweedy, who is serving as Red Cross Commissioner for New Zealand overseas. This necessitates a mayoral election. When Major '1 weedy left Timaru he applied for leave for the remainder of his term, and the council granted six months. period expired some time ago, and Major Tweedy has been absent without leave for three meetings, and after the next meeting forfeits h's seat. Mr. Foote, the deputy-mayor, took no part, in the debate, but after the council’s decision announced that he intended to contest the mayoralty.
