A badly-damaged Allied reconnaissance bomber which has just arrived back at its, base fought off 15 Zeros. For 45 minutes the lone plane circled round the rim of a deep New Guinea valley with the enemy fighters making repeated attacks. Finally, it reached home with three of its crew wounded, two of its engines out of action, 62 shrapnel holes in the tail-fin, five cannon holes in the fuselage, and uncountable machinegun bullet holes all over it.
One Zero was shot down and two others which went out of the fight in flames, were probable crashes.
