AUSTRALIAN BEATS HAEGG’S TIME
(By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) ' (Special Australian Correspondent.) SYDNEY, July 27. George Campbell, 19-year-old Sydney athlete, has been timed to run the mile in 4min. 3sec. This is 3 l-ssec. faster than the world record established _ by Gunnar Haegg al Stockholm a fortnight ago. i Campbell’s .time ’cannot be accepted as a record. He had two instead of three timekeepers, and ifie 'course was measured with a cloth instead of a steel tape. Officials, however, say they are certain no mistakes were made. The Sydney sportsman Mr. George Nathan has offered to guarantee Campbell’s expenses for a trip to America to meet the world’s best in.races for patriotic purposes. Campbell holds the State r.ative record of 4min. 18 2-Esec. for the mile. .
