CLOTH RATIONING

Effect On Technical College Classes “The introduction of rationing for cloth l:as caused disorganization of the work hi the home science department. The college* becuusc of the nature ot its work, uses considerably more material other type of educational institution,’ reported the director of the Wellington Technical College, Mr. R. G. Ridling, tu the meeting of the board of governors last night. “The girls engaged in dressmaking take a comprehensive course of instruction, the whole of which is based upon practice in the workroom and, if this work is to go on, materials must be available, in its early stages, as may be expected, material is required for practice and this material is not subsequently included' in any garments. In the art department also, where embroidery work .is taught, sami>lers must .be made by all students. 11l all stages, in fact, material for practice must lie available "We have found already that parents are diffident about allowing coupons to be used for the purchase of materials for this purpose, and have approached the Ration Controller with a request that the college be authorized to purchase oU licence materials that can be used iu this way. -Again, there are students who have not been able to afford the material they require for their work. Previously it bus been customary to supply that material from stocks held in the college and, without the issue of a licence, continuance of this practice is impossible. Reference was made by Mr Ridling to similar troubles with materials for tailoring, for general maintenance work, and for interior and stage decorations, whieh form an important part of the training in the home science and art sections. “Up to the present the Ration Controller has indie-ted' verbally that consideration will be given to. our request, but no written communication has been received.” reported the director.
