Dispatches To New Zealand Troops Overseas
LETTERS AND PARCELS Figures supplied last evening by the Postmaster-General, Mr. Webb, indicate that, if there is any complaint from the Dominion’s fighting forces overseas of lack of news or comforts from their homes, the fault does not lie- with their correspondents in this country or with the New Zealand Bost Office.' Since the beginning of the year, over 400 tons of mail matter for the troops have been dispatched from New Zealand, the volume practically doubling itself each quarter. The actual weights are:—JanuaryMarch, 30 tons; April-June, 65 tons; July-September, 127 'tons; .October, 116 tons; November (one week), SO tons. Total -118 tons. The figures in respect of the parcels included in the above mails are:— Jamiary-Mareh, 7190, weight, 29,850 11>.; April-June, ’22,435, 78,5771 b.; JulySeptember, 49.C32, 185,6931 b.; October, 52.966, 237,88711). “The handling of this large volume of mail matter, in addition to the department’s ordinary mail work has, of course, necessitated careful organization,” said Mr. Webb. "Mails for the overseas forces arc dealt with in a special section of the Rost Office at each of the four centres, and the sorting of letters, newspapers and parcels at this end is done in such a manner as to expedite delivery on their arrival at the Army Base Bost Offices oversea s.”
