P.E.N. Club Guests At Open Evening Alenib’ers of the P.E.N. Club were guest.s of honour at an open evening arranged by the New Zealand Women MTiters’ and Artists’ Society on Thursday. Tlie gathering was held in the Lyceum Club rooms, which were beautifully decorated With scarlet, roses and icolatid poppies. The guests were received by Aliss Nelle Scanlon, president of the society, and Airs. L. V. Phillips, secretary. Aliss Scanlon heartily welcomed the guests of honour and the visitors, and Air. Alan Alulgan replied on behalf of tlie P.E.N. Club. Mr. Alulgan, who a'eted as judge of the society’s annual literary competition, gave comments on the entries. Tlie winners were announced as follows: —Verse: Aliss Patrice Morant (Westland), 1: Mrs. O. AL Igglesdeti, 2. Short; story: Miss Roma Hoggard, 1 ; Mrs. C-. J. Morton. 2; Mrs. G. D. Hesscll, common ded.
The first prizes in both competitions were Hie Nellie Donovan Cups, and these were accoi.upunied by special ceriillcates prepared by'an artist member, Miss Gwen Harrison. Tlie awards were presented by Airs. Alulgan. Aliss Dorothy Downing contributed to tin' programme Willi some piano solos, and .Mrs. Anna Ginn gave a bracket of songs, accompanied by Aiiss Nora Gray. Mrs. Rio Love, Queen of Raraloiiga, gave an interesting talk on the arts, crafts, music and culture generally of iter people. .Supper was served under the direction of .Madame Bligh, assisted by members of the committee, coniurising Mis.s Nellie Donovan, Mrs. J. D. MaeQuarrie, .Miss Alary Seaton. Miss Jean Mather, Aliss G. Janisch and Airs. L. V. Phillips.
