Repertory Society Gives Proceeds To Patriotic Fund
Enthusiastic support Ims been offered |,v tlie Wellington Repertory Theatre to Hie Wellington Provincial Patriotic Funds Council, which has undertaken to raise £200,000 as its share of the £1,000,000 Dominion all purposes appeal. I lie society assisted in the first instance by devoting till proceeds of the tinal social evening, held last night, to this purpose and has planned to present a full-length play. ’’Spring .Meeting.” in the Concert Chamber for two nights next week, in aid of lite fund. Miss Constance Morice and Miss Alisa Newton are acting as joint honorary secretaries of tlie society's appeal. Last night a large audience in St. Francis Hall enjoyed a programme of plays, a dance novelty, and a minuet. Two examples of the work of famous Irish playwrights, Lady Gregory and .Sean O’Casey, both comedies, were presented. One was "Tlie ’Workhouse Ward.” by Lady Dun&tny, produced by Mr. N. A. Bryne, the east including Mrs. G. 11. A. Swan and Messrs. James Crawford and N. A. Byrne."- Mr. G. H. A. Swan presented "The End of the Beginning,”' by O'Casey, and took a part together with Mrs. G. C. Boyes and Messrs. Eric Lawson and James Crawford. Dancers in "Minuet,” by Mozart, were Misses Moya llempton, Mollie Brown, Molly Cook. Messrs. James Crawford, Charles Johnstone and John Proudfoot. This was arranged by Miss Molly Cook, who with Mr. J. Crawford also arranged an Irish novelty dance,
"Phil the Fluter’s Ball.” Main parts were taken by Mr. James Rogers, Mr. B. S. 'Withers and Mr. J. Proudfoot. Others were Mrs. G. Swan, Mrs. G. C. Boyes, Misses Barbara Basham, Margaret Gwyune, Mollie Brown, Moya Hempton, Molly Cook, Messrs. James Crawford, Arthur Ashley-Jones, George Vincent, Charles Johnston. Harry Painter.
Incidental music was played by .Mrs. Charles McDonald. Misses Olga Burton and Ormi Reid. Supper followed the entertainment, and tlie hall was cleared for dancing which continued till a late hour.
The hostess for tile evening was Mrs. H. Ivatt Graves, assisted by Mrs. L. Campbell. Mrs. W. Lane. Mrs. AL Brown, Misses Yvonne Holmes, Dorothy Barr, Ngairc Thomson and Marjorie Rose.
