FOURTH PERIOD IMPORTS
Time Extension Sought A decision to ask the Minister of Customs. Mr. Nash, to extend for six montbs from December 31 the final date for arrival in New Zealand of fourth period imports from the United Kingdom was reached by the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. The decision followed the reading of several letters from .British manufacturers referring to difficulties caused by air raids and shipping delays. “I am sure the Minister is definitely weakening, and is likely to do something to alleviate the position,” said Mr. Gai nor Jackson. Other speakers agreed, and several said that further representations bad been made to Mr. Nash in the light of the latest information received from the United Kingdom. Mr. J. A. C. Allum said I bat: under the strain of frequent air raids, British manufacturers were concerned with safeguarding their lines and getting on with the job. To put on them the anxiety of worrying about shipping goods to reach Now Zealand before December 31 was distinctly unfair, to say the least.
