OBITUARY
Mr. A. A. Gower
The death has occurred of Mr. Alfred Alexander Gower, Hawkstone Street. Mr. Gower celebrated his 84th birthday in October. Born iu Wanganui in 1856, the son of a chemist, he served his time in that profession in Masterton, and went into business on his own account in New Plymouth, and later in Batea and Wanganui. Mr. Gower came to Wellington 16 years ago, and conducted the Gower Pharmacy for some years. He took a keen interest in most public activities and sports. He was a member of the Wanganui -City Council for some years. He was a life member of the Wanganui Bowling Club, and was one of the oldest members of the Thorndon Bowling Club. Mr. Gower was a member of Lodge St. Andrew Kilwinning, Wanganui, and Lodge William Ferguson Massey, Wellington, and hud founded the Batea Lodge. lie was a past master of the 30th degree. lie was the oldest chemist remaining on the register of old chemists of New Zealand, and was one of the founders of the Swankers’ Club in Wanganui. In his younger days he took an active part’in the affairs of the Church of England. He married Miss Emma Bayly, New Plymouth, who predeceased him. He is survived -by Mr. P. F. Gower, Wanganui a son. and Mesdames O. K. Steele, Wellington, and A. Howarth. Wanganui. daughters. The interment took place privately in Wanganui on Thurs* day.
