WINNER OF OAKS STAKES

Belie Cane Was Bought For 275 Guineas

NOTES AND COMMENTS Royal Chief’s Record By ■|'i:i.i:uiiacii. I-'kom The Wacciiek. GIIRIS’I'CiHMICII. November 14. Belle Cane, ilie winner of the Oaks Slakes, was bred by Mr. Frank Armstrong. who I Imo liad the doubltul pleasure of having his own lilli, Cherry liny, fill the position id' runner-lip Io one which h<‘ sold. Belle Caiie was sold al Ilie 1939 National Sales to Mr. J. W. Smith lor 275gns. Mr. Smith (wo years previously had secured Beau Pere al the Westmere dispen-Ml for 3.'io(lgns., and had also been responsible for the keen competition for the stock of that sire. He leased. Belle Cane al the ringside to Messrs. O'Neill, and Hie lease will expire in June. She was unsueccso'ful in two starts as a I wo-year-old. when trained by O. Cox al Hawera, and, as she did not show any signs of coming early, she was turned out on her owner's J'arm. Resuming racing nt tin* Wanganui meeting in September, she won a division of Ilie maiden, and at Wellington last month won the Trial Stakes and the Pearee Handicap. At Riccarton she won the Spring Plate, was unlucky to miss at least a place in the Derby, ami won the Oaks. Bello Cane is out of Duck’s Kgg, a halfsister by Absurd to Admiral Drake aud Francis Drake. She is the second Beau I’cre filly to win the Oaks. Peerless having won two years ago. Won Canterbury Cup Twice. Since the Canterbury Cup was instituted in 1898, Royal Chief is the only horse to have won it twice. His trainer, F. D. Jones, trained previous winners in Reputation (1914), Amytbae (1921), Ballymena (1923), Limerick (1927), aud Nightly (1933). He also rode Mcnschikoff. another winner. Royal Chief has now won £15,822/10/-, for 22 firsts, 15 seconds, six thirds, and 15 times unplaced. Quick Beginner. Vanina, the winner of the Spring Nursery, drew 8 at the barrier, but he began so quickly that he was in front on the rails in a few strides. The starter, Mr. P. D. McNab, said afterward that he had never seen a horse leap out of the starting gale so quickly in all his experience. Juvenile form this season so far is so mixed that supremacy is still to be defined, but it appears that Varunu is well on the way to the top class of the ladder. He was bred by Mr. L. 11. Otway, at Cambridge, aud is by the Solario horse, Vermeer, from Astrath by Chief Ruler, from Hyades by Hymettus—Straga, by Birkenhead. He is thus closely related to Ammon Ra, Prodice, Phaolu, Te Hero aud Gallio, and the brilliant Hymestra was a brother to his granddam. In several respects of- conformation and pace Varuna resembles Hymestra. He was purchased at the sales by Mr. IV. lorns for 425gn5.. and is trained by J. 11. Jeffet'd. Failed To Settle Down. Par Avion is not the colt he was at Trentham. He has failed to settle down since leaving home, and on both days that he has been produced he has been on his toes. He is a much better galloper than his Riccarton form would make it appear. Coincidence. A coincidence in connexion with the result of the -Spring Nursery is that the runner-up, Renarde, was also bred at the same stud as the winner, Varuna. Renarde is a black filly, by Foxbridge from Aureola, by Hunting Song. .She is related to Lucullus Lad and Maioha, ami further back in the pedigree is the same stock as that of Varuna. Passed at the National Sales for 150gns., she was 'bought privately by Mrs. G. L. Rutherford, North Canterbury, and she is in the stable of J. C. Tomkinson at Riccarton - . Feeling Hard Tracks. Sly Fox has been feeling the hard tracks at Riccarton and in both his starts, the Cup and Jockey Club Handicap, he has finished last. The Buzzer. Though the running of the Canterbury Cup was far from being a real test, The Buzzer looked and ran a much better horse than he did in the New Zealand Cup.

Airline’s Effort. Airline has had a bit of a leg since winning at Wellington and he was produced for the first time at the meeting yesterday. He was responsible for a fair effort throughout, ami should be improved by the race. Avon Handicap Winner. Rakahanga, the winner of the Avon Handicap, was having her first success since Easter. She won this event two years ago. A Likely Colt. A likely-looking colt for later development was produced in the Spring Nursery by the Chokebore stable. This is Full Pitch, a well-grown youngster by Cricket Bat, from Sailor’s Love, a sister to Waterline and East Passage. Full Pitch definitely throws to the dam's side of the pedigree, aud much resembles those two good gallopers Waterline and Fast Passage. Not nearly ready, he showed up with the leaders to the straight in a last-run race. Restive at Post. Tattersail was substituted for Biggs on Kentucky yesterday, as the colt is showing signs of restiveness at the post. He did not race nearly so generously as lie did for the stable lad on the second day, and it appears that Biggs, who has all the riding on him in private, can manage him better than anybody. No Race For Saint Toe. The North Island two-year-old, Saint Tor, was brought down to Riccarton to run in the Pioneer Handicap on Saturday, but in a track gallop he went so badly that he is returning home again without racing. Jockey luj’ured. C. G. Goulsbro, who rode Sly Fox in the New Zealand Cup, was caught in the harrier, and he received eye injuries that have kept him mil of the saddle since. Another North Island rider, 11. N. Wiggins. has returned home, and will be riding at the Waikato meeting on Saturday. Reminder. Nominations for all events at the Feilding Jockey Chth's spring meeting on November 30 and December 2, close at 8.30 p.m. today with the secretary, Mr. E. G. Goodbchere. Box 45, Feilding.
