DERBY STAKES TO GOLD CHIEF

Metropolitan Trots MENDEL SURPRISES Ollivier Handicap Won By Sandusky Dominion Special Service CHRISTCHURCH. November 1-1. The Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting was continued in fine weather, with a good attendance. The track was firm and fast. The totalizator handled 10/-, compared with £-18,904/10/- last y6 The result of the New Zealand Derby further complicated the question of three-vear-old supremacy, when Gold Chief won nicely at the finish from Shadow Maid and Peter’s Find. Unfortunately the two best three-year-old pacers in Special Force and Ronald Logan were absent. Surprise Potts lost ground at the start, and Shadow Maid and Walter Moore went off at a fast pace from Diamond Jim, Peter's Find, and Gold Chief. The

pace slackened as the field completed a round, at which, stage Diamond Jim broke and Walter Moore and Shadow Maid carried on from Gold Chief. Peter s li ind (who appeared to have some difficulty in handling the turns), and Surprise Potts. At the three furlongs post Walter Moore began to feel the strain, and Shadow Maia was left in front. At the straight entrance Gold Chief was on terms with Shadow Maid, and a battle royal commenced. A furlong .from home it was a question which would win. Shadow Maid failed in the run home, while Gold Chief held on in determined style, and won nicely. . Shadow Maid has been a consistent performer, and, after doing most of .the pacemaking with Walter Moore, just failed in the concluding stages. Leters Find did not impress. Double Figures.

The Sockburn Handicap winner, Manna's Son, paid a double-figure dividend on the win machine, and he thoroughly deserved his win. He was one of the leaders throughout, and fairly outstayed the remainder in the run to tue post. . . . ,„ Captain Bolt, trotting in great style, had almost reached the leaders with halt the journey covered, and he looked a certain witiuer, but half a mile from homo “e went to a break, and lost 100 yards. Guy Hugo challenged Gyrate three furlongs

from home, and Lament put in a great run Guy Hugo. Lament, Franz Derby (who had trotted solidly) and Mannas son, entered the straight almost on terms, and the finish was exciting. Manna s Son won nicely. Never Seriously Troubled. Ju the Wbiteleigh Handicap. Bush Laddie, always nicely placed, was never seriously troubled iu the run home, but Parrish Guide, trotting solidly, defeated Amonos for second_ place. I Im race was won in 4.31 4-5 train a 1.1niark, and Parrish Guide’s 4.29 4-t> was an outstanding effort. Big Dividend. A dividend approaching a quarter of a century rewarded supporters of Mendel, and he scored a well-deserved win in the Ellesmere Handicap. Without gaining many successes since he was brought from Southland. Mendel has raced consistently. , Mendel was first into the straight and was not seriously troubled. Brilliant Race. The Lelievre Handicap was not a good race until the concluding stages, when Peter Smith, with a brilliant run. got up to beat Accountant by a neck, with Harold Guy in third place only hall a length away. . , , , ~,,,„ At the last six furlongs post lungtrue was a length in front of Navy Bine, Bill B. Wee Potts, Accountant, Peter Smith (on the rails). Cruiser and Harold Guv. At the half-mile post L. A. Maidens’ pulled Peter Smith back to last, and be then commenced a brilliant run on the outside of the field. He fairly flearound the bunched field and was three sulkies out as the top turn was rounded.
