PROTECTION FOR PEDESTRIANS
Courtenay Place Tram
Terminus
SYSTEM OK ISLANDS TO BE
CONSTRUCTED
Proposed improvements to the streets in the vicinity of the tram terminus at Courtenay Place were approved by the Wellington City Council last night. Cr. W. Appleton explained (hat the idea was to create certain safety zones to protect pedestrians and keep traffic in the lanes. It was regarded as one of the most dangerous places in the city for pedestrians. Cr. L. McKenzie said he understood the most dangerous corner in the city was that of Elizabeth Street and Kent and Cambridge Terraces. Several lives had been lost there.
The plan laid on the table showed a continuation of the grass plots separating Kent and Cambridge Terraces, to opposite the corner of Majoribanks Street, leaving lanes for the tramlines, which would divide the new grass plots into two islands. There would be a further grass plot at the south end of the public conveniences; and the street left for motor traffic between Courtenay Place and Majoribanks Street would be divided into two lanes by a further island.
