Increased Farm Production Problems
•Sir. —Mr. Lloyd Hammond's letter re lating the farmers’ viewpoint of the New Zealand Government’s directions to increase food production is very timely. The two outstanding questions are, viz:
No. 1. Air. Nash's promise to purchase all unexportable surpluses. No. 2. The definite opinion of the Controller of Primary Industries, that ample shipping will be available to clear our coming freezing season’s kill. Question No. 1 should be finalized immediately by the New Zealand Meat Producers Board and a definite deal made.
Question No. 2. This is the controller's responsibility. If transportation overseas is doubtful, and reliable information so describes it, all meat killed in New Zealand works unshipped two months from killing should automatically become the property of the New Zealand Government. Also farmers with fats 'ready, but unable to kill, because of congestion at works, would have a legitimate claim on the Government as purchasers. Question No. 2 is based on fact. A scheme to economise space (ashore and afloat) by 40 per cent, has been proposed to the controller, but. no effort is made to try it out, the answer being “all the shipping required will be available for sure.’’—l am. etc., SAM S. TIAIBS, AA’anganui, November 12.
