HUTT ROSE SHOW

High Quality Blooms On Display

VALUE OF GARDENS IN WARTIME

The importance of New Zealand housewives supporting the fruit and vegetable canning industry in the Dominion and the benefits from New Zealanders patronizing their own seedsmen and nurserymen in these uncertain days when prices of imported seeds

were ever rising, were stressed by Mrs. Knox Gilmer, opening the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society's rose show in the Horticultural Hall. Lower Hutt, yesterday afternoon. She was introduced by the wife of the president of the society, Mrs. J. S. Barton.

Criticism had been levelled at the holding of Hower shows during the war, said Airs. Gilmer, but her own view was contrary to this. Never had there been a greater need for shows and for the growing of Howers. '•Build up your gardens for yourselves and your friends,” she advised. "Make them shrines. Make them places where you can rest, where you can find consolation. where you can forget the Devil’s handiwork outside.”

The rough weather of the past three weeks adversely affected the number of entries, but no fault could be found with the quality of the blooms on display. Miss V. Allman gained 1J points toward the Chapman memorial prize, Airs. Stuart Mitchell 24 points toward the H. AV. Kersley rose bowl, and Miss B. M. Ewen 2 points toward the Elsie memorial challenge bowl. These prizes are awarded for the most points gained in specified sections of the society’s four annual shows.

The show will be open again this afternoon and evening. Results of judging are: —
