TROTTING CUP TO MARLENE

Nelson Eddy’s Success DOMINION HANDICAP WON BY TAN JOHN Dominion Special Service.

CHRISTCHURCH. November 12. The. New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting was held in line weather with a very large attendance. The track was hard and fast. The totalizator handled £75,(>7(L compared with £73.270 last year. .Marlene's Game Fight.

Marlene won the Trotting Cup iu the manner of a little champion, for, though site was decidedly lame on returning to the enclosure, she showed the greatest gameness in her tight with Dusky Sound over the last furlong. It was only yesterday morning that Mr. C. S. Donald, acting under the advice of a veterinary surgeon, decided to start the mare. She had been hurt while in the paddock and was heavily bandaged. She does not appear likely to make another appearance at the meeting. It marked Mr. Donald's first win in New Zealand’s most important race, aud the first by bis brother, R. Donald, as reinsman. Dusky Sound, like Marlene, bad had an interrupted preparation, aud the stoppage in his 'work left him just short of the necessary stamina at the end of the race. Marlene found the race run to suit her, for, with . others making the pace, she wav allowed to unwind a brilliant burst of speed. The race was run at a fairly solid pace from the start. The first half was run in 1.6 .1-5, and a slightly increased pace showed Horse Power registering 2.11 2-5 for a mile. The mile and a quarter was run in 2.43 3-5, the mile and a half in 3.15 4-5, and the full journey in 4.1 S 3-5. making the last half in 1.3.

While the Cup was not the most sensational in history, it provided a most exciting race over the final stages and showed the stamina and gameuess of two really good horses. i’lutus and Horse Power were actually first away, and for the first half-mile were followed by‘’Dusky Sound. Renowns Best. Colonel Grattan, Fine Art. Southern Chief (some distance away). Blaii Athol, Great Jewel and Parivienne. while Bayard slopped ou the mark and was tailed off throughout. With half a mile covered. Horse Power aud Plutus were the lenders. and then in order followed Marlene, Dusky Sound, Colonel Grattan, Renown's Bost. Fine Art. Southern Chief, Blair Athol, Great Jewel and Tarisienne. with Bayard tailed off next. Dusky Sound raced up to the leaders and was soon showing the way to Horse lower, Plutus, Marlene. Colonel Grattan, Fine Art. Renown's Best, Southern Chief and Blair Athol. Half a mile from home Dusky Sound had a nice lead. but. Horse Power was keeping him up to his work and Marlene was handy. Into the straight the field raced, with Dusky Sound showI ing out from Marlene and Fine Art, who I had made a great run. The last-named, wide out, failed to sustain his run. and a furlong from home Marlene tackled Dusky Sound. Whips were drawn on both horses, and they fought stride for stride. Only the judge was in a position to give an accurate decision, and his award went to Marlene by the narrow margin of a head. Three lengths away was Colonel Grattan, while in closer order followed Renown’s Best, Fine Art, Great Jewel. Southern Chief and Blair Athol. Parrish Guide’s Fine Display. Parrish Guide gave a fine display of trotting in the Spring Handicap. After leading for the las» six furlongs, he had to record 3.37 1-5 from the 3.48 mark, representing a mile rate of 2.14. a remarkable effort b.Y a trotter not regarded as first class. Leading into the straight Parrish Guide had no trouble iu stalling off the challenges of Biworthy and Reception. A double-figure dividend on the win machine was paid, a surprising result when the form *d' Parrish Guide at the last meeting at..Addington is remembered. Biwortby showed plenty of speed and may have to lie considered in events biter at the meeting. Reception, who was well supported, trotted a fine race. Favourite Fails. A hot favourite in Chatmos left backers lamenting when he was easily beateu in the Victoria Handicap. He had every chance, but failed to make any impression on the leaders when serious racing commenced. Ned Worthy was soon in front, from Mankind. Waitaki Power. Worthy Need, Ziueali, Chatmos and Subsidy. The field was crawling along as the four furlongs post was passed in 1.10 2-5, and R. . Townley had Ned Worthy almost to a walk. The pace brightened and half a mile from home Ned Worthy shot away with a six lengths' lead. Zineali emerged from the ruck and. with a well-sustained half-mile run, was less than a length behind the winners at. the finish. Ned Worthy has beeu gradually winning to good class company and looks likely to do still better in the near future. 0. B. Hooper, driver of Chatmos, was fined £5 for careless driving. i An Easy Win. .Ronald Logan, a warm favourite, justified the support accorded him when he won the Riecartou Stakes and confirmed the good showing lie had made in the Sapling Stakes, when he finished second to Special Force. Ronald Logan, with a handy lead, had Gold Chief, Gallant Maid, Diamond Jim. Jill and Statuette as his closest, attendants throughout, but in the straight the race developed into a contest between Ronald Logan and Gold Chief. The former had an easy win. Return To Form.

Nelson Eddy, warm favourite in the earlv betting, won the Canterbury Handicap after a splendid race, in which he showed a return to his very best form His finishing run was made at great speed, ami he fairly outclassed the remainder of the field. The real battle began in the straight, when Nelson Eddy tackled Peter Smith. 'Pile last named, a good, game lighter, found the task too much for him, and he failed to the challenge of Nelson Eddy and Great Divide, who made up ground over the latter stages. Nelson Eddy won well, and. now back to his best form, he should go on to better .things. Great Divide gave a fine display, and his form was instructive in view of engagements later at the meeting. He did 4.20 4-5, a fine effort on the outside of the field. Of the unplaced division Lady Milne may be the best to remember. First and Second. C. S. Donald did not improve on his record when Tan Joint and Captain Bolt finished first and second in the Dominion Handicap, for in previous years Captain Bolt and Wahuooka have been the first two to finish in the trotter’s races. Tan John improved on nil his previous displays, and. while he was very tired at the finish, he held just enough in reserve to beat his stable male. In the straight Tan John and Captain Bolt were together ahead ol Mauna s Sou. Lament and Jenny’s Guy. In l ' John was tiryig badly in the concluding stages, but htdd on Jong enough to beat Captain Bolt by a head, while leading a tired 10l were Manna’s Son and Jenny’s Guv

Willoivba+ilt Makes Amends. Willowbank, who had given a very poor display since coming to Canterbury, justified her Southland repiitatiou wlteu she won the Empire I hindjmip. after outstaying the field. Site si ill showed a tendency to bore, but once in front site made no race of it. She is a speedy pacer and may win again soon. Great Blaze, always well placed, finished well, and Black Surprise should be improved by the race. I’mir Kacc. The Haglcy Handicap wa<# a poor race at muddling pave, and only the clever driving of M. Holmes in the straight gate Navy Blue th.- victory from horses that It,ml been loafing on ibe journey. While Waipalti and Kenworthy were lighting oni the finish witli Lightning Lady. .Navy Blue Hashed through lhe centre of the field .’111(1 scored a narrow win.
