News And Notes From Town And Country Protection Society. A great deal of business bus been transacted at. recent meetings of the Society for the Protection of A) omen and Children held m the society’s rooms, Bowen Street, under the presidency of Mrs. J. O’Shea. It has been decided to make an energetic canvass for funds, as these have been seriously depleted by many necessary expenses, including the employment of two secretaries, the work being far beyond the powers of one person. The offer of. her home for an afternoon party by Mrs. H. G. R. Mason. Hobson Street, was gratefully accepted and many plans for entertainments are being made lor the party which will take place ar Hie end of the month, including a ‘'gipsy tent,” darts, competitions and afternoon tea. A copper trail is also being arranged and a number of kind people have promised assistance. It is hoped that those who realize the value of the work will attend the party, all information being obtainable from Mrs. O'Shea, Airs. Covantry (secretary), or any member of tlie committee. Homespun Gifts for the Navy. The Wellington Navy League office acknowledges a fine hand-knitted scarf from a country well-wisher, Mrs. 11. Al. Orr, Tangoio, Hawke’s Bay. The gift was made from home-grown and homespun .wool, and is of an ideal texture for men of the Navy in the North Sea. Many fine Itandsputi knitted garments received by the office lately are an indication of the growth of home-spin-ning. particularly in the country districts. Farewell to Army Nursing Sister. A farewell social was tendered to Sister Marjorie Brown at AVaikanae last Saturday by the AVaikanae and district soldiers’ entertainment committee. Sister Brown will leave shortly on active service. The hall was prettily decorated with red, white and blue streamers, arum lilies and bamboo. On behalf the residents and Hie committee, Air. Lowry, ALP., presented Sister Brown with an engraved knife, fork and s]K>on. scissors, forceps. ami theimometer. Mr. Parata, on behalf of the Maori residents, presented her with a greenstone tiki on a silver chain. Air. p. Bennett spoke on behalf of the returned soldiers and Air. Moult for the residents. A happy evening was .spent in dancing and singing. N.Z. Woman For Air Service Overseas. Miss Kathleen AlcLean will leave this week for England, where she wil> join the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. Aliss McLean, who qualified at AVigrain last year for her pilot s A licence, is probably the first woman to leave New Zealand for air service overseas. She has two sisters already iu England. Aliss Norah AlcLean, who lives in Dorsetshire, and Miss Marion McLean, who left New Zealand more than a year ago. Children in Pageant Recital. Airs. Isabel Halligan presented a number of her pupils recently in a “Pageant of Character Cameos From Literature.” Those taking part were: Ngaire Fisher, Isabel King, Alan AlacDiarmid, Joan Manderson, Doreen Milne, Margaret Loftus. I.M.C.A. Ladies’ Auxiliary. The ladies’ auxiliary of the Y.M.C.A. Boys’ Division met recently for their usual monthly meeting, which was presided over by Airs. H. Brooker. Blanket Society in Lower Hutt. The monthly meeting of Ibe Lower Hull branch of tlie Plunket Society, which was held in the rooms on Tuesday evening, was presided over by Airs. J. AV. Andrews. Nurse Thomas reported a busy and satisfactory month, 220 visits having been made. The shop day held in the rooms under the auspices of the mothers' committee had been most successful. Mrs. F. Al. Renner, president of the Taiia-Knox branch of the society, announced that a copper trail held by Hint branch was most successful. Those present included. Airs. 'V. R. To be Present at "Spring Meeting." The Prime Minister, AH’. I’- Fraser, the Alinistcr of Defence. Mr. Jones, and their wives, and also the children of their Excellencies. Lord and Lady Galway, the Hon. Simon AloncktonArnndel. and Hie Hons. Alary. Isabel and Delia Alonckton. have signified their intention of being present at one of Hie two performances of “Spring Meeting,” the comedy to be presented by Hie AVellington Repertory Society in 11".' Concert Chamber of the Town Hall in aid of the £1 .000.000 Patriotic Fund.

Institute’s Social and Dance. A social and dance lollowing Hie meeting in Hie iifternooii, was held to celebrate Hie I bii leeiil b birthday of the Ekelaliiinil AA‘onicu’> I n.-l il ute. and was n success both soeinli.v and lin.iiichilly. Mrs. Fraser presided at Hie afternoon's galliering. when a report on the recent Im 1 f ye:i rl.\ council ineeiing was rend. Visitors and .Members. Several visitors attended with members at the November meeting of the Kimberley Women's Institute and an interesting afternoon was spent. It was decided to give the usual Christmas party to members’ children and arrangements were made accordingly. Mrs. Christopherson cave a detailed report of the council meeting ai Porirua. Mrs. Doyle demonstrated the making of a wool mop and members were asked to make one for competition next mouth. Competitions were won by Mesdames Evans, Bryant, Hagan, Crowe and Kissane.
