BERHAMPORE FLATS

Seventeen In Government Blocks Occupied TWO MORE MONTHS’ WORK Seventeen of the 50 flats in the blocks being built by the Government in Adelaide Road, Berhampore, are now oc'cupie’d Some of the tenants have been in six weeks. Within the next three weeks 12 more flats will be let. The demand for them is so great that-there were 300 applicants for the first group of 17. The whole development which is the first attempt by the Housing Department to provide flats, is expected to be complete by the end of July. _ The flats are pleasant little homes in which thousands of people in Wellington would be glad to live. ..They vary in size from one room to four rooms. Each is self-contained and has its own bathroom and kitchen, its independent electric hot water service an'd two outside entrances. The interior finish and fittings are similar to those of the Government houses, though the rooms are smaller. The kitchens, better described as kitchenettes, are provided with ample cupboards and drawers, and all the cookers are electric. Each flat is wired for a telephone, though two telephone booths have been built in the courtyardThe flats which have been let already are of the one-and two-room type in the buildings in the northern side of the group. The other buildings in the group, which is in the form of a square, are in various stages of completion, the flats on the western side being nearly ready for occupation and the building on the eastern side requiring a great amount of work yet- When the work was started, it was expected that the job would be finished before this, but shortage of labour and materials .since the outbreak of war has delayed it. When the builders have finished, the grounds will have to be levelled and planted. ■
