A relic of the-early days of railways in Canterbury, an old carriage, stands in tile yards of the Kangiora station. It was first used on the ChristeliurchFerrymead line, the first railway in Canterbury. The carriage hits been converted into a storeroom, and. in spite of tiio fact that it was built more than SO years ago. it has lost nothing of its solidity. The woodwork shows no signs of rotting, while its original paint has ttoeled off in only a few places. It is about 18ft. in length, and lias three doors on each side, plenty of window space being provided. Between the doors at one end is a wooden partition, apparently to divide the first and second class seats Agreeing that permanently settled labour was the only solution of the farm labour problem. Mr. .1. 11. Bretnner. at the animal meeting of the I’aiiiatua branch of Hie Farmers' Union, said he considered the recently-passed Hural [lousing Act was no more than a “makebelieve.” The delegation of the management of the Act to county councils and the placing of liability on the ratepayers practically made the scheme inoperative. “I doubt if a single house has been bail: under the scheme.” lie said. “let look at tile number of Sinti 1 houses going up in Hie towns. S' liie move s!o.-.1,| |>e made to get the Government to build houses lor country residents.”
