VETERANS’ REUNION
South African Association There was a fine muster last night for the annual reunion of the Wellington South African Veterans’ Association, over which Captain J- J. Clark presided. The principal guests were Sir Harry Batterbee, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in New Zealand, Mr. Ferry, M.L.C., president of the N.Z.R.S.A., and Captain A. McIntosh, of tile Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, representing the mercantile marine. At the start there was an unusual honouring of tlie toast of “Absent Comrades,” which was proposed by Lieutenant Colonel F. B. o Mabin. This took the form of a complete blackout an'd the singing of the hymn "Abide With Me” by the company. Then followed the .sounding of the "Last Post” by Trumpet Major Chegwiu. Toasts honoured included those of the Mercantile Marine, proposed by Mr. Nelson Jones, the Press, by Mr. E. Knights, and women helpers of the association, by Mr. B. C. Cull and Mr. D. Wilson. There was a first-class musical programme, tiie contributors being Messrs. E. Dean, F. Marshall, D. Hopa, A. J. Mazengarb and H. F. Wood.
