WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
Some Recent Meetings Belmont.—Mrs. Black presided. Business included remits for the Dominion conference in July; Mrs,. Treen was appointed delegate to the conference. Delegates and hostesses were appointed to tlie Lower Hutt Federation meeting in Wesley Hall on April 30, and all members were requested to bripg or send contributions to afternoon tea on that day. Mrs. Spence reported that the quota of patriotic parcels had been dispatched. A “bring and buy” stall to provide funds for the next quota was well patronized. Mrs. Bennett was the winner of the cushion competition. Next month's competition is to take the frrm of 20 suggestions for the year's programme, comprising lectures, demonstrations, and competitions; those not entering to pay a fine. Mrs. Black gave a demonstration of cake icing and decorating, and ' the monthly gardening notes were read by Miss Presants. Silverstream.—The monthly meeting was well attended by members and friends. Three new members were welcomed by the president, Mrs. J. A. Taylor. A very interesting demonstration was given in the making of loose covers, and- the demonstrator, Mrs. Hannibel, received a posy. Mrs. Taylor presented a silver spoon with the institute emlneni to Mrs. Moss in token of gratitude from the members as founder of the branch. Competitions were won by Mrs. Dawson, Mrs. Smyrk and Mrs Spaekman. The committee reported sending four parcels for soldiers overseas, and members were still meeting weekly to sew and knit for patriotic purposes.
Mangiitainoka.—Mrs. J. Purves presided. It was decided' to donate £1 to the fighting service welfare appeal. Greetings were received from the Ottawa ■Women’s Institute, Canada. Mrs. Hughes opened the social programme with a pianoforte solo, which was followed by a nlay, “Another Pair of Spectacles.” The parts in this were taken by Mesdames Purves, Tait, jun., and Miss Waldman. After afternoon tea had been served by the hostesses, the candles on the birthday cake were lit by Miss J. ■Waldman. These were blown out by Mrs. King, and the cake cut by Mrs. Kelly. This cake had been made and given by a member. Mrs. Coulter extended greetings on behalf of Ngawaparua 'Women’s Institute and the Bush Federation, and Mrs. Etz on behalf of Pahi: 1 institute. raraparaumu.—There was a large attendance of members. Notice was given that parcels of comforts had been packed and forwarded for. the boys on active service. Mrs. Johnston, who had left ihe district, was presented with a small gift and wished every happiness in her future home. Regret was also expressed that Mrs. De Montalk was soon to leave the district. Mrs. Smart, retiring secretary, was presented with a shoulder spray in recognition of her splendid services to the institute. Delegates nominated to the federation meeting were Mrs. Smart and Miss Lynch. Miss Whitelaw gave an Interesting talk on social conditions in Loudon. which was greatly enjoyed. Competitions were held.
• Newlands.-—The new president, Mrs. Fraser, presided over an attendance of 15 members. . Tlie thought for the month was given by Mrs. M’atkins. A cordial welcome was given to .Mrs. Hillman, a visitor from Greymoutb, who demonstrated the making of fancy coat hangers. Competitions were held.
