SODIUM VAPOUR LAMPS

Disappearance From The Exhibition Route The sodium vapour lamps, which lighted the main traffic route between Wellington and the Exhibition, are being dismantled for erection elsewhere. Naturally residents in those streets that were given unaccustomed illumination are Dither downeast over the change, which they regard ns practically a black-out. Steps are being taken to dismantle the vapour lamps along Seatoun Road, Bridge Street. Kingsford Smith Street, Lyall Bay Parade, Resolution Street, and other places where these powerful lamps were used in purely residential localities. In some situations the lamps are to be allowed to remain.

Though the authorities would'’ like very much to be able to light many of the streets with modern lamps, the innovation is very expensive, and in any case supplies are now difficult to secure.

In view of the fact that trams traverse Crawford Road no decision has so far been arrived at: as to the dismantling of the lamps there. The same applies to the new Ruahine Street, which takes the bulk of the motor traffic via the tunnel to the eastern suburbs.
