SOUTH CANTERBURY RIVERS RISE
Bridge Approaches Swept Away (By Telegraph—Press Association,) TIMARU, May 8. As a result of the steady rain in the past four days, all rivers of South Canterbury are in high flood, large areas are inundated, and much damage has been done to root crops. The Onari River burst its banks at several places near Clandeboye, between Temuka and the coast, and four families had. to be taken from their homes. In the opinion of one slettler, the water has not been higher in the past 40 years. i The Geraldine-Fairlie highway is blocked as tlie result of the washing away of Skipton Bridge, and considerable damage is reported in other parts of Geraldine county. The approaches of several bridges have been washed away, and replacement will cost thousands.
The Main South Road is blocked as the result of the washing away of the north approach to Walhao Bridge. There are two detours, and both of these are blocked.
