NEW PARKING SYSTEM

Trial With Cars Facing In On Lambton Quay

For the first time parking with vehicles head in to the kerb was tried on the widest part of Lambton Quay, Wellington, yesterday, and will continue to be used in the area marked for some days. Parking in Lambton Quay by the tail-in method at an angle of about 60 degrees, has caused considerable traffic delays with inexperienced or diffident drivers. Automobile Association oflicers reported that the new method, by which the cars are driven head-in to the kerb at an angle of only 40 degrees, was already proving itself yesterday, though there were still some drivers in the. marked area who were unaware of the change and backed in. Because of the narrow angle and because it is easier to back a car out into the open than into a confined space, it is expected that the new head-in parking will not lead to trams being held up by cars backing out. It has the additional advantage of offering less likelihood of the obstruction of the footpath by parked cars, as drivers going forward can judge their distance more accurately.
