MOTOR LICENCES

Issue Of New Number Plates BEGUN YESTERDAY A commencement was made i'n Wellington yesterday with the issue of licences for motor vehicles for the year which begins on June 1. Application may be made at any post office, hut plates will for the time being be issued only from the Chief Post Office and the Wellington South branch in the city, and from the I’etoue, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Eastbourne and Johnsonville offices in the outer suburbs; further out, Plimmerton and Paekakariki are also issuing offices. It is expected that there will again be a substantial number ot applications, and the motor registration branch of the Post Office is hopeful that car owners will ease the rush, of work as well as give themselves less delay by making early applications for their new plates. Because petrol coupons are to- be issued with the plates, car owners will this year be required to state the horse-power of their engines aud what fuel they consume, as mileage tax is payable iu respect of cars which hurt* other than petrol. . The new coupons will be valid as from June 1. Those who lay up their cars for part of the year-will .receive coupons for the. remaining mouths when they do take out their licences.

To overcome the possibility of forgery, the new coupon sheets have been printed in two colours aud stamped with a replies of the signature of the Oil Fuel Controller, Mr. G. L. Laurenson. As in past years a combined registration plate aud drivers' licence bureau will be opened in the Town Hall later .in the month, probably iu tbe lasc week, but both the Post Office aud the city traffic office hope that a substantial part of the work will by then have beeu done, at the post offices in the issue of plates and coupons, and at. the traffic office in the renewal of drivers’ licences.
