WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Close Finishes In Senior Games The Wellington. Basketball Association continued its , grade championship matches on Saturday afternoon. For the first time in . many years University defaulted their first grade match; usually, in spite of holidays, they field their first team. There were other defaults, too, and in some cases the officials were told too late to let the opposing team know. Captains could help in preventing this. Third junior anti fourth grades had a meeting, and decided they would like a representative team, and each team offered to raise £1 in a fortnight. Training College and W.C.O.G. had an interesting game, in which the honours were fairly even. Both teams made mistakes in tactics,' and both missed oppor, tunities of scoring. 'Somehow the goalthrowers missed the wind. M .E.O.G. have made a good number of changes in their team, and had three new girls, having re-graded some who bad been in the team for a long time. It will be interesting to see what difference these changes make. The game with Island Bay was quite good, but the College, team was definitely superior in all sections. The surprise of the day was the (leteat of Aspro by Technical College O.CL This was a game full of interest, and I .C.U.y. played almost inspired basketball to win a good game. Taupo’s chances against Y.W.C.A. were considered bright, as they beat them every time they met last season. On Saturday Y.W.C.A s. centre was definitely superior all the time, but Taupo had a strong defence line. D. Martin, a last year rep. being outstanding. It would be interesting to see this player in a fn-st grade team. The Training College and Furlor match was poor f<ir senior B. and many third grade matches have shown better form. Melrose had a good win against Bemblei. This now team has possibilities, but tlte Wembley teauK this year are definitely weaker than last'season. They lime ■’ large number of new players, and may improve as the season progtesses. u suits: — ,Senu>r A. Kia I’m won bv default from I niversity ■ w E. 0.0. (20), Island Bay <l.’L W.C.O.G. (241.
