Franklin Meeting FOXSEN’S SUCCESS IN PRESIDENT’S Dominion Special Service. PUKEKOHE, May 4. The Franklin Racing Club's winter meeting was held today in dull threatening weather. Showers fell after the President's Handicap. The track was soft after rain overnight. There was a large attendance. Totalizator investments were £37,177 against £36,183/10/- last year, when eight races were decided. Exciting Finish. Jumping out smartly from No. 1, Trig Station attempted to win the Pukekawa Hack Handicap from end to end, only to be beaten comfortably in the straight by Acreman, who did not become prominent till he ran up fast on the outside entering the straight. The favourite, Royal Message, was not well placed, and, after making a sharp run at the turn, held on solidly for third. Royal Fawkes was a creditable fourth, followed by Lady Acushla, Valley Maid and Joan Peel. Mayfair showed a lot of speed in the middle stages, but failed to run on. Promising Win. Having his first race over fences, I'he Dozef scored iu very promising fashion in the Papakura Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles, leading practically throughout and jumping boldly. Jewelled Girdle, finishing on just outstayed Makoi for second and Race Whip was fourth, ahead of Tavern Song and Rua King. Va " l . so ; Sigurd and Phildale fell, and Very Glad stopped at the fourth fence. Glenbevan Impi'ov&s. After leading into the straight with Cheval de Bataille, Glenbevan stayed on well to win the Otaua Handicap from Venture, who ran on solidly after being handy throughout. Stokowski finished on to be a creditable third, and Monte Cristo was fourth, ahead of Gasacre, British Talent and Cheval de Bataille, who tired after going very fast early from No. 21 at the barrier. Kingcraft, the second fancy, was first away, but soon drifted and gave no trouble. Glenbevan showed improvement. Foxsen’s Silecess. The President’s Handicap was run. at a slow pace early, when Valmint, pulling hard, and Bronze Moth were the lead, ers. The speed quickened when Day M ind ran up to Bronze Moth aloijg the back, where Namara and High Sea also became prominent, and Valmint went back slightly. Bronze Moth, Namara, Saccone and Foxsen were the. leaders into the straight, Foxsen staying on solidly to defeat Namara by a head, with Bronze Motb another head away third. Saccone was a close fourth, followed by Sunny Downs, Knight of Australia, Jack Lar and High Sea. Valmint beat himself by pulling hard early and finished m the rear. Good Contest. The Onewhero Steeplechase was a good contest between the placed horses over the last couple of furlongs, Dauber stayin" on after taking the lead when the pacemaker, Count Roussillon, tell about five furlongs from home to win by a length and a half from Baldric, who finished strongly. Baldric was well back in the early running and came into the picture only in the last half mile, taking second near the end from his stab cmate Mahala, whom he bumped when he bored out just on the post. The placed horses all gave good . displays, Dauber running on well in spite ot the' fact that he pulled hard early. was fourth, followed by Aintree an Tutor The stewards reversed the second and third placings, awarding Mahala second' oV the grounds of interference. Big Dividend for Third. After being last seven furlongs from home, Royal' Message headed the pacemaker. Bronze Emerald, just after reachin" the straight in the Harrisville Hack Handicap, and she drew away to beat him comfortably. Nuipapa, who aso became prominent at the lurm battled on solidly for third, paying double figures for [i place. . . VVildore was closer in fourth position at the finish than at any other stage, and was followed by Hunting Bee who was badly placed early. Maioro and 1 rig ,Station, Ngawiri and Tidlsoni, after being prominent to the turn weakened in the straight, where Hackensclimidt fellSpinning Wheel bled and finished a long way back. . Won in Good Style. After following Tc Takina and Orwere into the straight, Silver Quex assumed command to win the Rnerata Handicap in good style from Olympus, who was iust behind her nt the turn, and challenged on the outside in the run homo. Te Takina, who made a very fast run at the top to reach the front after being a little slow early, tired into third and Orwere. was fourth, then followed Orate, Little Artist and ’Erliek. Silver Quex was having her first run since going into the care of H. Gray, and registered a solid performance. Ihe each-way favourite.
