BIG DIVIDEND AT HAWERA
Rollicker Pays Over A Century . WAS UNSUPPORTED BY OWNER Streamline Returns To Form Dominion Special Service. HAWERA, May 4. A mild sensation was provided by the Hunting Song gelding Rollicker on the concluding day of the Eg'mont Racing Chib’s winter meeting when he returned odds of more than a century and a quarter to win the Davidson Handicap, the principal flat race on the programme. Rollicker had started earlier in the day in the open sprint in which he finished eighth. The race he won was the last but one on the card and, with a fair amount of rain falling during the afternoon, the track had become greasy on top, conditions in which Rollicker revelled. Rollicker was raced for a few seasons by his breeder, Mr. R. T. Reid, Auckland, but about a year ago he passed into the hands of R. Barlow, the New Plymouth trainer, who has raced him a lot, but with moderate success. Lately be has been running fair races, but Barlow did not support him on Saturday. Of the £25 invested on his win chance there were four £1 tickets and the remainder in 10/investments. A Hawera youth was fortunate enough to have £2 each way on him- . , , Fields were of good average size for tbe concluding day and the racing again keen. Streamline, who was a top-class jumper when he went off the scene two years ago, returned to winning form in the hurdle event, while the other jumping race, the Adamson Steeplechase, saw En Tour confirm Waverley form by again beating Lady Stella. Gold Dale bridged the gap from hacks to open class by leading all the way in the Mokoia Handicap. Though the attendance was good, totalizator investments were down a little, on last .year, the sum of £23,572 being handled against £25,340 on the second day in 1930. The aggregate investments for the meeting were £41,743, compared with £45,606 last year, a decrease of £3863. This was actually a good result for the club as last year's winter figures constituted a record.
An inquiry was held at the request of the stipendiary steward into the behaviour of the mare Fiancee at the post in the Mokoia Handicap. She kicked viciously, interfering with several horses, and just before the dispatch was made lashed out at El Meynell (with whom she. was bracketed) and inflicted injury to P. Atkins, with the result that El Meynell took no part in the race. The stewards decided to take no action as the connexions of Fiancee announced that the mare would not be raced again this season. . As on the first day, the meeting got behind time, and was completed 45 minutes late. The last race was run in a very bad light, and, quite apart from the inconvenience it causes to the safety of’jockeys 5s a consideration which should compel elulhs to adhere more "losely to the time schedule. First For Two Years. Making his first appearance as a jumper for two years, Streamline scored a comfortable win in the Maniawapou Hurdles at odds"of a quarter of a century. Kaiwaka led for a mile, where Streamline took over and he was not headed, winning, easily by a short length from Kaiwaka and Ruling Star, who were both hard ridden. Kaiwaka lacked confidence at his fences. Ruling Star ran an improved race, as did Aussie Ra, who < finished fourth. The first day winner, War Laip, was one of the last to finish. Streamline looked big in condition, but was always doing it comifortaibly over the last hwlif-mile, and he pulled up quite sound. Hum-a-Song Wing Easily. Hum-a-Song was first out in the Shorts Hack Handicap, but at the end of two furlongs was headed by Zest, who led to the home turn, but hanging out badily. Hum-a-Song got the opening on the rails into the straight, and shot away to win ■easily by four lengths from Zest. Counter, who got away badly, and was well back til] the last furlong, finished very well ■along the rails to run third, a length and a half behind Zest. Veldette, prominent to the straight, tired, into fourth place, and Judgment, Flying Eagle, and Boiten l/ark were next, Gold Dale All the Way. Gold Dale, a hack winner ou the first day, claimed a 71b. allowance in the Mokoia Handicap, and defeated the open sprinters pointlessly. He ran past Footloose in the first furlong, and was never headed, winning easily by two lengths. Footloose and Sleeveless followed the winner throughout, and finished as named with half a length between them, without ever looking likely to overhaul Gold Dale. Endorsement, Alunga (who began slowly), Fiancee and Gay Sbton, were best of the others. Red Cat and Lexden were always well back. Glessamor was in the bunch behind the leader to the distance, and then retired. El Meynell took no part in the race, bis_rider, P. Atkins, being kicked 'by Fiancee, who gave a lot of trouble at . the start, lashing out at several horses. Improved Form of Clinch. Clinch showed marked improvement on first day running to win the champion Hack Plate, even allowing that the extra distance favoured him. lie moved up from second to last to second 'between the live and the three, took over the lead from Miss Clipper turning for home, and never looked like being caught in the final furlong. Ruatiti, who began well from a wide position and occupied a prominent position, was second, holding off a late run from Chief Lord by half a bead. Minority was last but one two furlongs from home and put in a great run to finish fourth. Young Charles, Arabic, Miss Clipper and Dark Eagle ran good races, finishing together just out of a place. Kilcush tired after going well for seven furlongs and Piastre was never prominent. Steeplechase To En Tour. En Tour, who fell in the Egrnont Steeplechase on the first day, comfortably accounted for the favourite, Lady Stella, in the Adamson Steeplechase. lie allowed Lady Stella to make the pace till three fences from home anti then went to the front stay there and win by four len-ths Lady Stella again jumped well, but’wtis outstayed. Promenade ran a good race to finish third two lengths behind Lady Stella and Red Sun was a poor fourth. Bay Dawn and Longfellow were the only other runners to complete the course, 'Cynical Jack being pulled up on the first round. Rollicker at Long Odds. Rollicker, having his second start for the day. 'brought off a big surprise in the Davidson Handioaip, which he won comfort ably. to return odd« of over a century and a quarter. He was second behind Notium 'ftwo furlongs from home, and won after a short struggle with
Galteemore, who was caught in the last stride by Aimigo, a dead-heat for second being declared. Rehearsal was fourth, and Winsome Lu next. Amigo was unlucky, being cheeked by Notium just before reaching the home turn. Amigo was going well at the time, and probably would have won with a clear passage. Davilia Makes Amends. Davilia, who was unlucky on the first day, made amends w.hen she won the Borough Hack Handicap. She, and the three who finished in the places behind her, City Song, Hun to, and Colossal Chief, were in the leading bunch throughout, and though Davilia was forced out wide imaging the turn into the straight through Hunto hanging out, she always was going like a winner, and won with something in hand. City Song made a bold attempt to win, but she had no chance with Davilia, and was run to the narrowest possible margin by Hunto, who would have been much more trouble to the winner had he not hung so badly all the way. Colossal Chief ran on better than he did on the first day, and best of the remainder were Kilometre, Gitama Lass, Seiglinde, and Viracious. The last-named finished well after losing his position in the middle stages of the race. Details Of The Racing MANAWA.POU HURDLES, of £173. One mile and a half. 7/7 STREAMLINE, J. ».
