PRACTICAL TEACHING

The Rev. Arthur Muriel, M.C., preaching in the Congregational Church, Cambridge Terrace, referred to the practical teaching of the Bible in the primary schools of New Zealand. In about 900 schools lessons were given once a week to more than 90,000 pupils. This was supplementary to the great activities of the Sunday schools. In addition, at the beginning of each school day, devotional observances, including Bible-reading, were held in more than 400 schools with an average attendance of about 100 scholars in each school. This brought some measure of Bible knowledge to thousands of children in backblock areas who otherwise w’Ould have no public opportunity to discover the contents of the Bible, an essential element in any sound education.
